AVIAN PLASMA: THE SUCCESSFUL ALTERNATIVE TO PORCINE PLASMA
The main effects of the contribution of spray dried animal plasma (SDP – Spray Dried Plasma) are the stimulation of intake and the reduction of post-weaning growth loss, together with an improvement in digestive health and performance. These effects are more notorius in young piglets or with a high infection pressure.
SDP contains a wide variety of functional proteins (immunoglobulins, albumin, growth factors, and biologically active peptides) whose mechanisms of action are diverse: Reduction of proinflammatory cytokine expression; improvement of the immunocompetence of the piglet due to the contribution of immunoglobulins; improvement of intestinal morphology and enzymatic activity, and others.
Although porcine plasma has traditionally been used for these purposes, there are recent studies that consider avian plasma to be a good alternative as a total or partial replacement for porcine plasma.
